Related activities on women, peace and security SAMAGRA JAN UTTHAN KENDRA (APEC) also known as SAMAGRA is a social development organization registered in district administration office of Siraha in May 21, 2002. It has been operating programmes on human rights promotion, conflict transformation, peace building and reconciliation in the community level since its inception.

  1. a) Trained and Experience Human Resources

This organization is established by local individuals engaged in human rights promotion, media and teaching since long. Its key staffs including board members are trained in conflict transformation and peace building and have been facilitating trainings in mediation and conflict transformation. They are also engaged in community mediation mostly in cases of domestic violence, dowry and witchery and have tremendous experiences in facilitating mediation, and trainings on conflict transformation and community peace building.

  1. b) Conflict Mitigation and Peace building Project Management Experience

APEC has successfully implemented projects such as ‘The Peacebuilding Initiative (TPI), Justice and Security Development (JSD), enhancing rights of marginalized communities etc in partnership of Search for Common Ground, Nepal, United States Institute of Peace (USIP), and Informal Sector Service Center (INSEC) etc in Siraha, Saptari, Dhanusha and Mahottari districts. It has also implemented Local Governance and Community Development (LGCDP) and Local Governance Advocacy Forum (LGAF) programmes in coordination with local government agencies including District Development Committee (DDC). APEC has been implementing ‘Youth Engage’ in partnership of Search for Common Ground, Nepal to reduce organized violence in 8 districts of terai including Siraha since April 2014.

  1. c) Good Rapport, Relationships and Coordination with key stakeholders in the district

APEC has developed good rapport and relationship with district police office, district administration office, women and children development office, Nepal Bar Association office in district and has been working in collaboration with them for promotion of human rights, conflict mediation, conflict transformation and good governance. APEC also forms district project advisory committee (DPAC) consisting head of government offices in the districts and civil societies including local media and takes the members of the DPAC in the field monitoring to receive feedback from them to make essential improvements in the project to ensure quality and impact of the projects. As a result, APEC has good relationship with key stakeholders in the district and is receiving good support and coordination from them. It has earned and maintained good record and image among the key stakeholders in the district and been recognized as the organization promoting peace, development and human rights.

  1. d) Well-established and community-supported own Media House

APEC has also been promoting human rights, community harmony and peace and development through its own community radio— Samagra FM. 107 Mghz for 3 years. It broadcasts radio programs on peace, human rights and conflict transformation including radio talk show called KHULA DHARTI and radio drama called SANGOR for conflict transformation.

  1. e) Information and Human Rights Resource Center

APEC has also established an information and resource centre for human and minority rights in its head office in Lahan this year where, books, documents, resource materials and maps on human rights are available and anyone can access to them. APEC established youth dialogue centres in Dhanusha and Lahan to promote culture of dialogue and mediation to transform community conflicts.
